Our flagship magazines, Leatherneck and the Marine Corps Gazette continue to tell the Marine Corps story and explore the significant issues facing Marines today with professionalism, accuracy, and excitement. If you like the print editions of our magazines you will like our Online editions even more as Both magazines showcase unique and highly interesting features that are Not available in the print versions. I urge all of our members to go to the online versions of Gazette and get involved in the backing and forthing of professional opinions constantly unfolding on Gazette's new Discussion Board. Also check out Leatherneck's latest Podcast, which features a respectful salute to the warriors of Iwo Jima. I am pleased to report that the Association continues to grow in members who choose to forego the print edition and to receive their magazine subscription online only. Selecting the Online only option is an advantage to both our members and to the MCA as well. MCA offers our members the Online only option at a substantial cost discount because it eliminates the mail handling and postage costs which form so large a share of the subscription costs. Reduced magazine handling costs equates to greater MCA resources for our professional development and awards programs that directly support Marines. The Online magazines are the way to go. No hassles with the mail and the magazines are ALWAYS on time and always available anywhere you can access the Internet. MCA encourages all of our members to consider the Online only option. Mark your calendars for the MCA Ground Dinner scheduled for 29 March in the Washington DC area. Great forums for addressing significant issues affecting the ground elements of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), the Ground Dinners always feature a prominent guest speaker. This dinner features LtGen John F. Sattler, Director for Strategic Plans & Policy, J-5, the Joint Staff, as our guest speaker. I urge all MCA members in the area to attend. Click here for more details. As always, thanks for your support of the professional association for all Marines.

Leatherneck continues to tell the Marine Corps story, yesterday, today and tomorrow in each of our issues; however, our April and September issues have more of a focus on the "tomorrow" mission of the magazine in that we tell our readers a little more about new gear being acquired, tested or simply available for Marines. In this upcoming April issue, I think you will appreciate Leatherneck writer Isaac Pacheco's feature article evaluating 12 commercially available combat knives against the currently fielded knife in his, "The Cutting Edge: Marines Put Commercial Fixed-Blade Knives to the Test." With the assistance of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Center of Excellence and several students undergoing training, Isaac developed a practical evaluation and let the Marines see which knives were "Marine proof." For April, Isaac also penned a fairly comprehensive look at several other items being tested, evaluated and acquired in his piece, "Click, Click, BOOM! Commercial Innovations Keep Corps Floating, Flying and Firing." Upgraded tactical vehicles being fielded in Iraq that provide significantly improved personal protection against improvised explosive devices; an improved, light but durable Micro-Air Vehicle, that hovers over the battlefield or recons routes of advance, We also hold true to that part of the mission that tasks Leatherneck to tell about today's Marines. The April issue includes several small articles on those Marines in Iraq and those training to go and also a little personality piece on a father-son Marine team who served together in Iraq. The father, Master Gunnery Sergeant Kendall Phelps, retires in April, a little more than 40 years after he stood on the yellow footprints at MCRD San Diego. He leaves the Corps in good hands as his son, Major Chris Phelps, will continue the Phelps Marine tradition. Completing the mission item, "yesterday" is never difficult because of the expansive and rich history of the Corps. In the upcoming April issue we offer two significant articles. From World War II history, Major Al Bevilacqua, USMC (Ret), tells our readers about another family of Marine warriors--the Hansen brothers. Three brothers went to war and one returned. Two of the three were awarded the Navy Cross for heroism as they fought side by side at Cape Gloucester. I know April's "Brothers in Arms" will strike a chord with each of our readers. From Vietnam, we continue our Vietnam: 40 Years ago series with "Operation Union I: -- The Que Son Valley Became a Bloody Piece of Real Estate," by LtCol Otto J. Lehrack, USMC (Ret). Overall, the April Leatherneck does tell the Marine Corps story. I hope you agree. Check it out on the Web and if you are not receiving the magazine, you may think it's time get on board. We hope so. |

The Marine Corps Gazette is the professional journal for ALL Marines and is now accessible in its entirety ONLINE so our members and subscribers can read it any time and anywhere that they can access the Internet. The April issue of the Gazette contains the winning articles from the annual Chase Boldness and Daring Award. The winning article recommended a radical paradigm shift in Marine Corps Rotary Wing Aviation. The second place article has provocative recommendations on preparing for the new operating environment we face. The award board recommended that 18 of the 21 entries be published in the Gazette over the next several months. You may not agree with all the authors, but they certainly will stir debate. GO GREEN and drop the paper edition of the Gazette! Save the environment as well as $$$$ on your renewal when you select the online ONLY Gazette subscription option. The online edition provides exactly the same content as the paper magazine, but with additional features such as searchable archives and hot linked key words spread throughout the content allowing further reading on a wide variety of interesting topics. If you subscribe to the paper Gazette, you will always have access to the online version. | ||||||||||
