FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT & CEO

Dear MCA Member,

It has been a dynamic and event filled summer and your Marine Corps Association is working hard to achieve an equally exciting and action packed Fall on behalf of our members.

I am very pleased to report that the 5th annual Defense Forum Washington (DFW), which MCA co-hosted with the United States Naval Institute on 5 September, was a great success. Over 450 attendees gathered to participate in revealing and hard-hitting panel discussions and individual presentations on the subject of “Implications of the Long War on Naval Expeditionary Capabilities and Forces.” On behalf of MCA, I offer my special thanks to Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Edmund P. Giambastiani, USN and Tom Ricks, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq, for providing thought-provoking addresses. Many thanks also to all of the discussion panel members for their frank participation.

The DFW has proven to be a crucial forum for exploring current issues affecting naval and expeditionary forces and MCA looks forward to continued annual promotion of this event. In that light, I also want to extend a very special thanks to our DFW program sponsors without whose support we could not have made such an important event happen. I encourage MCA members to visit our web site to read on site reviews of some of the session high points. Click on www.mca-marines.org and then click on the DFW links.

As an additional focal point for September, MCA will host the annual Ground Awards Dinner on 21 September in Arlington. An integral part of the MCA awards program, the Ground Awards Dinner honors the Marine of the Year from each of our Divisions. On behalf of the Marine Corps Association, I offer congratulations and thanks for their service to the winners of this year’s awards. They are:

1st Marine Division Sgt Brian G. Bowman
2nd Marine Division Sgt Aaron C.Torian
3rd Marine Division Cpl Charles R. Stiles
4th Marine Division Cpl Ryan W. Matjeka

The Dinner also serves as the opportunity to present the prestigious Leftwich Trophy, which recognizes the active-duty USMC captain serving with a company or battery, who most clearly demonstrates the ideals of courage, resourcefulness, perseverance and concern for the well-being of our Corps and its enlisted Marines. On a sad note, this year’s presentation, to Captain John W. Maloney, who died in combat action while serving his country in Iraq, will be the first Leftwich trophy awarded posthumously. Our condolences and appreciation for Captain Maloney’s service and sacrifice goes out to his widow and family.

MCA continues to modernize, improve and streamline our operations to provide higher quality and more accessible service to our members. Our modernization efforts, spanning magazine publishing, appearance and navigability of our web site, provision of member benefits and services and improved retail systems all focus on benefiting you, our members. I encourage you to watch for changes as they unfold over the next several months. I am excited and think you will be too.

Semper Fidelis,

Les Palm

Major General, USMC (Ret)
President and Chief Executive Officer

LEATHERNECK

Leatherneck continues to tell the Marine Corps story, yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Leatherneck Magazine continues to utilize today’s newest technology to more effectively reach our audience through print and online media. The latest installment of Leatherneck podcasting in September, features contributing editor retired LtCol Arthur P. Brill’s revealing outcall interview with the 33rd Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Michael W. Hagee. This, and other interesting podcasts are available 24/7 on Leathernecks’s Podcast page. We encourage you to visit our Podcast page at www.mca-marines.org/leatherneck/Podcast.htm today!
MARINE CORPS GAZETTE

Continuing to move forward with structural changes to produce a more readable and useful magazine, the staff of Gazette is moving towards a more MAGTF centric thrust in content selection as a means of achieving broader appeal throughout the Marine Corps. Moving away from single overarching themes that tend to focus primarily on one community or issue, adoption of a MAGTF emphasis as the central theme in future editions, aims to deal with professional issues across the spectrum of MAGTF communities.

The October Gazette features two articles in particular, that readers will not want to miss. An article on countering improvised explosive devices (IED’s) examines the most psychologically effective threat and actual casualty producer our forces currently face in Iraq. Another article critically examines the subject of recruit training and suggests updating our traditional approach on the drill field in many novel ways. Both will spark considerable professional interest and debate.

The staffs of both the Marine Corps Gazette, and Leatherneck cordially invite readers in the northern Virginia area to visit the Modern Day Marine Exposition in September. Gazette and Leatherneck staff will greet visitors during the expo at the MCA booth during the expo. Come down and see us!!! See below for more information on the Expo.

On 17 August 2006, Heaquarters Marine Corps, Installations and Logistics and the Marine Corps Association co-hosted the 2nd Annual Ground Logistics Awards dinner to honor the top officer, enlisted and supporting civilian logisticians of the year as well as the top Marine Corps logistics unit of the year. Guest speaker, Lt Gen James F. Amos spoke to a near capacity crowd which included the current Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Magnus, and the next Commandant (Designate) General Conway.

For a detailed recap of the event, including awardee biographies, General Amos's remarks on the importance of logistics and pictures of the event please visit the Professional Development section of the MCA web site located at: www.mca-marines.org/profdev/logisticsawards_dinner.htm

Once again, many thanks to our Ground Logistics Awards Dinner Sponsors:

29 August was a memorable day at Camp Lejeune as over 220 retired and active duty Marines, Sailors, spouses and local businessmen met for an afternoon of camaraderie and professional military education at the Retiree Luncheon there. Following a delightful lunch, elegantly described by a well-satisfied attendee as “Great chow”, the meal culminated with a rousing and motivational presentation by former Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Alfred Gray, USMC (Ret). True to form and as EVERY Marine who ever met General Al Gray would expect, the audience was energized and highly motivated following his candid and insightful remarks. The MCA would like to thank General Gray for his presentation and would also like to thank sponsors, Bank of America, DHS Systems and Jones-Onslow Electric, for supporting this event. Mission accomplished and a good time had by all.

              VITAL SIGNS

WASHINGTON, D.C.

5 October 2006 from 1100-1300 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott, Arlington

Mark your calendars and call now to set up your reservation. Bring some comrades with you.

Featured speaker for the luncheon is General James L. Jones USMC, former Commandant of the Marine Corps and now serving as U.S. European Command/Supreme Allied Commander, Europe.

Open to all retired officers and enlisted Marines, the Retiree Luncheons are fraternal gatherings supporting those who desire to keep abreast of current Marine Corps status and provide a means to maintain close relations with the Corps and it’s leaders. This luncheon should be particularly memorable as General Jones is a very dynamic speaker and a leader who has served and is serving in top and crucial positions during a highly pivotal time frame. You don’t want to miss his candid remarks.

Visit our web site at www.mca-marines.org/profdev/retiree_luncheon_dc.htm for additional details and to make your reservations.

MCA RE-BRANDING EFFORT

What is a Marine Corps Association about if not about carrying on and supporting our Marine Corps heritage and rich sense of tradition. That being said, MCA is also about new ideas and refreshing change. In that light, and as has been mentioned before in MCA Today, we are in the process of developing a new MCA logo and associated tag lines as part of a dynamic re-branding effort aimed at igniting the imagination of our members and prospective members. Our goal is to appeal more broadly to our potential membership pool and to achieve instantaneous name recognition in a compelling way that use of our current logo does not. Our current logo, a slightly modified Marine Corps seal, tends to confuse viewers into thinking of us as an official branch of the Marine Corps rather than a private organization in support of the Corps. There are key advantages to MCA, and to our members, to change this perception and the revision effort allows us to strive to be more vivid, and thus, more instantly recognizable in the public eye. Through focus groups, we have developed a range of logo options and supporting tag lines that we think achieves the goal and does so without losing sight of who we are and where we came from. These options are in review and have been sent, in the form of surveys to a wide range of members and non-members for candid reactions. So, where are we in this process? MCA expects to present a new and improved face to our members and to the world on November 1. Not an easy process and one fraught with no small degree of angst, it is none the less crucial. We ask for our members to maintain an open mind and, we ask for your support.
MCA WEB SITE

Supporting our re-branding effort outlined above, MCA is also totally revamping the look and functionality of our web site. Web site designers and a content writer are currently working closely with MCA staff to re-engineer the web site for a refreshing new look, easier site navigation and more clarity in the treatment of sections dealing with providing information and instructions.

In particular, MCA would like to draw our member’s attention to two new or greatly improved features:

NEW ONLINE STORE. Starting Monday, 1 November our current on-line shopping option, accessible on the MCA web site, will get a face-lift as we transition to an entirely new retail management system. The new retail management system as well as the final “look” for the new “On Line Store is projected to be entirely in place on 1 November. In addition to a fresher appearance, the On Line Store will be easier to navigate, more responsive, work more rapidly and will allow for item and product category searches that are easier to use. Looks great, works faster, easier to use-SERVES YOU BETTER-That is our goal! Check it out: www.mca-marines.org

CAREER CENTER. MCA is pleased to announce an entirely new web site feature that will prove a great benefit to Marines seeking jobs following retirement or release from active duty. Also set to debut on 1 November 2006, the Career Center will allow MCA members seeking jobs to post their resumes for employers to review. The site will also display employment positions available from prominent companies. MCA is excited about the new Career Center and expects the idea to really take off. Exclusivity is key here as this will be a MEMBERS ONLY section of the web site so that members will have a “leg up” on available jobs. AND, many of the employer/advertisers will post positions specifically because they seek Marines to fill them. MCA is offering sizable discounts for advertisements from member/advertisers and they will have ready and continuous access to the member/job seeker resume bank.

Our goal is to activate the new web site, graced with our re-branded logo and supported by a new retail system on 1 November. We are making substantial progress and eagerly anticipate achieving this goal on time. Access will be through the same web site address with which you are currently familiar: www.mca-marines.org. Check it out.

SPECIAL THANKS

Special Thanks to Bank of Hawaii and the Marine Corps Federal Credit Union.

MCA extends a very special thank you to Bank of Hawaii and MCFU for their ongoing sponsorship efforts at USO’s and military air terminals in Hawaii and North Carolina. Both companies sponsored the placement of MCA published magazines in these strategic locations, allowing transient Marines free access to both the Leatherneck and Marine Corps Gazette while traveling to and from operational theaters worldwide. An effort which has proved popular and of benefit to traveling Marines, MCA has been very pleased to receive a number of glowing testimonials from Marines in transit expressing enthusiasm and thanks for the access.
MODERN DAY MARINE EXPO — COME MEET YOUR MCA STAFF

12-14 September at Quantico, Virginia

The Modern Day Marine Expo is a key event occurring annually in September. Co-sponsored by the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps League, the Expo is unique in that it is the only exposition of its type, which exclusively showcases the Marine Corps and exclusively targets the Marine Corps market. Featuring currently used and developmental equipment, systems, services and technology, the Expo is a great opportunity to see how and with what the Corps operates. For the first time ever, the Expo will be conducted in a central location at the Quantico Marine Base. This year the event will grace the parade field in front of Lejeune Hall, main side. It should be pointed out that this is just across the street from the clubs at Quantico making lunch time foraging easy!!

If you are within 200 miles of Quantico, you will not want to miss this event. See what is happening and run into old friends.

The event runs from 10:00 AM-3:30 PM on Tuesday and Wednesday and from 10:00-3:00 on Thursday. There is ample parking around the parade field and ADMISSION IS FREE with no need to register in advance. Those in civilian clothes will need to register on site to gain a name-tag allowing admission to the exhibits. For more information visit the expo link at www.marinemilitaryexpos.com/marinecorps/modern_day/index.jsp

The Marine Corps Association will staff an exhibitor table at Expo to recruit new members. Come out and see us!!! We look forward to seeing you there.

As a further means of supporting our members and clients, the bookstore is expanding their hours to increase access to busy students and weekend visitors.

PROFESSIONAL READING PROGRAM

MCA takes great pride in our supporting programs for Marines. One of these programs is not nearly as well known, as it should be. The Marine Corps University Foundation (MCUF), in partnership with MCA, manages the Marine Corps Professional Reading Program. The program encourages and provides resources to units in our operating forces to establish or add to unit professional libraries. This allows deployed Marines the opportunity to read current professional military literature on subjects dealing with operational issues facing them while serving in forward operating areas. During 2005, the joint partnership provided professional military education books to 145 different units. When MCUF expends program funding for the year, MCA directly supports the program from association funds. This year, MCA’s direct support provided needed PME materials to the following Marine units:
  UNIT
CLR-15, 1st Maint. Co, Unit 42285
HQCO 1st MLG Unit 42175
B Co. ATBN 2nd Mar Div, Unit 20165

MILITARY HISTORY TOURS

Wake Island (7-13 December 2006)
This 65th anniversary tour to Wake Island might possibly be the very last as the base, controlled by the USAF has been declared “excess” and scheduled to close next year. This year’s tour will be led by General Carl Mundy, USMC (Ret), 30th Commandant of the Marine Corps and a serious historian of the battle.
For more information about this historic commemoration tour visit Military Historical Tours web site at: www.miltours.com

Fall Recon to Vietnam (23-26 October 2006)
This “recon” will cover most of the important battlefields and cities in Vietnam and includes an optional post tour to Dien Bien Phu. This tour is conceived as a training session oriented towards those desiring to become battlefield tour guides. For more information about this historic commemoration tour visit Military Historical Tours web site at: www.miltours.com
POSSIBLE SCAM WARNING

Recently, MCA has received warning letters from several members about a possible money making scam involving use of the MCA Membership Directory. The scam involves a phone call to a member with a Membership Directory profile from someone claiming to have items of historical or sentimental interest. The caller, relying on profile information attempts to gain the confidence of the member by talking about allegedly shared Marine Corps experience and then attempts to offer the items of interest either for sale or for free if the member will send shipping costs. Our members are advised to be wary of calls of this nature from people they do not know.
MCA GROUP INSURANCE

Do you have what is needed to help fight the battle against cancer?

We care for our members, and we don’t want to see your nest egg wiped out in just a few months. Don’t be misled into thinking you have enough insurance to cover the medical cost of treating cancer. Most insurance companies don’t cover all the costs to treat cancer. The statistics of being diagnosed with cancer in the U.S for a male are 1 out of 2, and for women they are 1 out of 3. Don’t be caught off guard. *

The MCA Cancer Care Plan was developed to help MCA members. We would like to send you cash benefits if you are ever caught in a battle against cancer.

  • These benefits, up to a lifetime amount of $300,000.00**, would help with many aspects of your treatment including: hospitals, operations, doctors, medications, and more.
  • In this plan we’ll pay you $30.00 for each insured member of your family so they may receive an outpatient diagnostic test for cancer this year, and each year afterward while you’re in the plan.

You are guaranteed acceptance into this plan if you’re an MCA member (or the spouse of a member), you’re under 80 years of age (under 65 in CA), and you have not been medically treated for or advised of cancer (with the exception of skin cancer) for the last 5 years.

CLICK HERE to request more information about the MCA Cancer Care Plan, and find out why it makes sense for today’s military family.

Underwritten by: Monumental Life Insurance Company, Baltimore, MD
*The American Cancer Society, Facts & Figures, 2005.
**Plan pays up to $300,000.00 lifetime maximum subject to specific plan benefit schedules and individual benefit maximums.
Some exclusions and limitations may apply.

MARINE TRIVIA QUESTION

The first person to e-mail the correct answer to comments@mca-marines.org will receive an exclusive Mission: Essential coin. Please include your name and address in your e-mail. Good luck!

Tangibly protected America in Cold War with Marine Corps service as a reservist - moved on to intangibly protect the Big Apple twice, in thespian service with nom de guerre of Winstone Zeddemore (who you gonna call?). What is his real name and in what two big hit classics did he help save NYNY from dreaded ectoplasmic weapons of mass destruction?

The Answer to last month’s trivia question, “The Marine Corps currently has over 50 battle streamers decorating the Marine Corps colors with more pending. Which streamer denotes our earliest service?” is the Revolutionary War Streamer from 1775.

Congratulations to Dr. Erik V. Myhrberg for being the first to answer correctly.
